Juventus were thumped 4-1 by Villarreal last night on Martin Caceres’ debut, but Ciro Ferrara believes “this slap in the face will do us good.”
The Bianconeri were so far unbeaten in their summer friendlies, falling to Aston Villa in the Peace Cup Final only in a sudden death penalty shoot-out.
But this hammering is a rude awakening for a side that had beaten Real Madrid 2-1 last week.
“We were heaped with praise and did well up until now, but this slap in the face will do us good and get our feet back on the ground,” mused the Coach.
“We will get back to work in a relaxed manner. This is a team at the highest level, regardless of this evening. We are upset, but also convinced we can do well in future.”
With Diego still out injured, Sebastian Giovinco started behind David Trezeguet and Alessandro Del Piero in Salerno.
Del Piero was the first to test the goalkeeper from a Trez assist, but Santi Cazorla brought a tough save out of Alex Manninger, then opened the scoring just shy of the break.
He avoided a Felipe Melo challenge and unleashed a left-foot screamer from distance that left Manninger with precious little chance.
Ex-Barcelona defender Caceres, who arrived this week on loan with an option to buy for £9m, made his debut for the second half.
But Juve fell to pieces as Manninger parried a Pereira effort into the path of Brazilian Nilmar, then a scuffle broke out sparked by Christian Molinaro’s foul on the goalscorer.
Amauri and Robert Pires went close before the ex-Arsenal star made it 3-0 by tapping in from impressive solo work by Perreira.
Amauri wasted a counter-attack by misplacing the pass back to Vincenzo Iaquinta and Juventus did eventually get on the scoresheet with a Tiago Mendes corner whipped on to Amauri’s foot.
However, moments later the Yellow Submarine completed the 4-1 rout with a Pires volley. In stoppages Iaquinta’s free kick was beaten away and nobody was ready for the follow-up. |
