Juventus defeated rivals Inter on penalties in the opening game of the Trofeo TIM, as Amauri pounced on a Nelson Rivas howler.

The two Scudetto favourites went head-to-head in Pescara for the traditional mini-tournament, which is made of three 45-minute games between Inter, Juventus and Milan.

The Nerazzurri went close with Ricardo Quaresma testing Gigi Buffon before Thiago Motta made the most of a lucky ricochet to then lob the goalkeeper.

Esteban Cambiasso limped off with a muscular problem, but it’s always controversial when these two sides meet and the tension exploded in the final minutes.

The referee pointed to the spot for a dubious coming together between Marco Materazzi and Amauri, but the defender was so furious that he was sent off for dissent.

It didn’t make a difference, as Julio Cesar did brilliantly to save Vincenzo Iaquinta’s penalty.

Inter thought they had weathered to storm to take home the 1-0 victory, but in the final minute substitute Rivas placed an awful backpass straight into the path of Amauri for the equaliser.

It went to a shoot-out with Christian Poulsen hitting the post, Walter Samuel blasting over and Davide Santon’s final effort saved.

Juventus beat Inter 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
