Miroslav Klose and Vincenzo Iaquinta had the best chances as Juventus pick up a precious point away to Bayern Munich.
Following their disappointing 1-1 home draw with Bordeaux, the Bianconeri went into the big game of Group A. Diego returned to support Vincenzo Iaquinta and David Trezeguet, while Nicola Legrottaglie filled in for the injured Fabio Cannavaro. Bayern had won their opener and chose Miroslav Klose instead of Mario Gomez or Ivica Olic.
Juve played with their silver grey away strip and Bayern had a strong start with a chance in the opening four minutes. Thomas Muller got to the byline and flicked it over Gigi Buffon, but the ball flashed across the face of an open goal.
Klose nodded wide, but after that initial flurry of activity, Juve made it a more balanced encounter. Zdenek Grygera was halted for an incorrect offside flag, while Diego nutmegged a defender to turn an angled drive wide.
Ribery dribbled between Grygera and Giorgio Chiellini to chip Buffon from close range to hit the roof of the net in a splendid solo effort.
Jorg Butt smothered another Diego attempt, but the Brazilian had to be last man with a remarkable sliding tackle in defence to stop Muller from scoring when clear on goal. It was fitting Diego cleaned up this counter, as he had lost the ball in the other half to start the move.
Klose's diving header whistled over the bar, but Mauro Camoranesi went on a powerful run and his low snapshot was palmed off the line at full stretch by Butt.
Klose and Bastian Schweinsteiger had more dangerous headers from the corner flag, but Trezeguet spun round for a fierce volley that shaved a coat of paint off the crossbar.
Bayern lost Arjen Robben to a right knee injury on the stroke of half-time, making way for Olic. Juventus had the last chance of the first period when Diego threaded through from the right for Trezeguet, prompting a tricky Bayern clearance.
Klose failed to make the most of a Ribery cross to the back post and Ciro Ferrara made a change, introducing the more defensive Christian Poulsen for a still not 100 per cent fit Diego.
Iaquinta both created and wasted a wonderful scoring opportunity on 65 minutes. He harassed Daniel Van Buyten on the edge of the box only to then fire over off balance instead of leaving it for the on-coming Trezeguet.
Amauri and Gomez replaced Trezeguet and Klose for the final 15 minutes, but the tempo of the game had dropped. Schweinsteiger tried to go on a slalom through the Bianconeri defence, but was halted by Legrottaglie.
Iaquinta went very close when he held off Badstuber to turn and volley in the area, flashing the finish across the face of goal. |
