Giorgio Chiellini's header and some crucial Gigi Buffon saves gave Juventus their first win over 10-man Maccabi Haifa.
The Bianconeri were on a five-match winless streak in all competition and still without a victory in the Champions League, while Maccabi had lost both their games so far. Ciro Ferrara was without Tiago Mendes, Alessandro Del Piero, Hasan Salihamidzic and Christian Molinaro, but Momo Sissoko made his Euro debut this season. Sebastian Giovinco was picked with Diego to support David Trezeguet. Maccabi Haifa had Biram Kayal suspended, injured Eyal Golasa and flu-hit captain Yaniv Katan. The rain was pouring in Turin to make conditions difficult.
In the opening minute Gigi Buffon was forced into a spectacular one-handed reaction save from point-blank range, as Vladimer Dvalishvili was allowed a free header from six yards.
Trezeguet was tugged back by Teixeira on the edge of the box and received a free kick in the D, even though he exaggerated the fall in the hopes of earning a penalty. Fabio Grosso's set play was beaten away by goalkeeper Nir Davidovitch.
Juve had a dismal start and were struggling to make an impact, Trezeguet turning a Grosso assist wide and Sissoko's daisy-cutter whistling past the post.
Lior Refaelov drilled over from the edge of the box, but Giovinco did force three bookings for Teixeira, Jairo Culma and Osman. Jonathan Zebina went off just 35 minutes in to make way for Martin Caceres after picking up a knock, although he did not appear to be injured.
Sissoko again went close with a towering header wide of the back post from Mauro Camoranesi's free kick.
Grosso drilled over from distance and Diego was tripped outside the area. Diego took the free kick himself and flashed it across the face of goal. Curiously, all three of Juve's Champions League games this season have reached the half-time break with a 0-0 scoreline.
Maccabi made two changes, introducing Israel Zaguri and Mohammad Ghadir for the second half.
The Bianconeri finally broke the deadlock straight after the restart with defender Chiellini. He was left unmarked to nod in a free kick from six yards, curled in by Diego from the left flank. The last six Juve goals in the Champions League have been scored by Italians.
Ghadir closed down Giovinco's shot from a corner, while Diego's lob was over with the goalkeeper stranded. Diego and Grosso exchanged passes quickly down the left for the Italian to cross and Trez came sliding in, forcing a desperate reaction save out of Davidovitch.
A corking Giovinco right-foot strike again prompted Davidovitch's tough save, but there was bad news for Juve when Dutra hacked down Felipe Melo. The Brazilian limped off clutching his ankle and was spotted in floods of tears at the touchline.
Tiago Dutra also smashed into Chiellini with a very high foot and studs straight on to his ankle, leaving Maccabi with 10 men. He had been on the field for only 11 minutes.
Trezeguet should've made it 2-0 moments later when he pounced on a poor Keinan backpass, but the goalkeeper got there first. Amauri replaced Trezeguet for the final 10 minutes, but it was 10-man Maccabi who threatened an equaliser when Dvalishvili's shot from the D forced a diving save from Buffon.
Soon after a looping Keinan header from a touched-on free kick worried Buffon too.
Diego threaded through for Camoranesi and the shot with the front of his boot smacked against the upright from seven yards.
However, Buffon confirmed his Man of the Match status with another brilliant save to deny Ghadir's angled drive on the counter.
