Juventus must wait for the final showdown with Bayern Munich after their 2-0 defeat away to group winners Bordeaux. They need at least a point to qualify.
The French outfit were already through to the next round, while Juve would be qualified by matching Bayern Munich's result against Maccabi Haifa. Alessandro Del Piero got his first start of the season after a series of injuries, playing wide left in the 4-2-3-1 system. Momo Sissoko also returned, but David Trezeguet and Vincenzo Iaquinta were sidelined with Fabio Cannavaro rested. Bordeaux missed star player Yoann Gourcuff and Jussie.
The Bianconeri were held 1-1 in Turin back in the opening round, which was the only goal they have conceded in the Champions League this term.
After less than three minutes Gigi Buffon had to palm a long Plasil free kick round the far post, as it had gone past everyone. Bordeaux had a strong start and Plasil volleyed wide at the end of a well-worked move.
Juve improved as time went on, as Giorgio Chiellini nodded a Diego free kick off target and Carrasso smothered a Diego counter-attack.
There was a scare when Del Piero played at being a defender, his clumsy challenge on Wendel fortunate not to give away a penalty after 32 minutes.
Buffon needed a stunning save soon after to deny a certain goal, as Chamakh sprung the offside trap to go clear on goal and the 'keeper stood his ground to palm away the powerful finish.
Buffon also denied Gouffran and in first half stoppages Felipe Melo was booked for a cynical foul to stop a very dangerous Bordeaux counter.
Bordeaux broke the deadlock early into the second half. Another Plasil free kick was whipped in and took the tiniest of glancing touches off Fernando Menegazzo's head to beat Buffon. It was the first goal Juventus had conceded in the Champions League since the opening round.
Juve had to fight back and Felipe Melo's snapshot skimmed the crossbar. Moments later a Diego screamer from 20 metres stung Carasso's palms and almost propelled the goalkeeper into his own net.
Juventus somehow failed to score on 64 minutes! Del Piero's inspired chip over the defence flashed across the six-yard box, where both Diego and Amauri incredibly didn't get the touch it needed for a goal.
Del Piero made way for youth team striker Ciro Immobile, who was making his debut in the Champions League. News filtered through that Bayern had taken the lead against Maccabi Haifa.
Diego trapped a Sissoko cross and had his shot charged down, then Legrottaglie nodded over from the corner.
At the other end a corner came out to Tremoulinas, whose strike was deflected wide off Chiellini with Buffon rooted to the spot. Surprisingly, Sebastian Giovinco replaced Amauri, leaving debutant Immobile as the lone centre-forward.
Carasso had to rush off his line to close down Immobile, then Diego ballooned over after Giovinco had earned a free kick. However, in the final minutes Buffon had to palm a low Planus free kick round the far post.
In fact, Bordeaux won 2-0 at the death when a set play was curled on to the penalty spot for a towering Chamakh header. This meant Juve conceded more goals in this match than in the rest of the Champions League put together.
